Does Invantive Cloud need Power BI Gateway?

Go to Dutch version

No; when using Invantive Cloud no Power BI Gateway is required.

We strongly discourage the use of Power BI gateway; the connection is straight from Power BI to Invantive Cloud. So there is no need to leave a PC on to refresh the data; this is bad for the environment and moreover, nowadays relatively expensive in terms of power consumption (power costs can easily be more than 50 euros per month, apart from the cost of the PC).

You can publish a report to PowerBI.com directly from Power BI as described in:

That is the short and correct answer. The longer explanation now follows.

What is Power BI Gateway?

Power BI Gateway is a piece of software that runs continuously on-premise on a PC or Windows Server. It allows the Power BI Service to access data that is only available within the corporate network or requires local software. An example of data within the corporate network is a database that resides on a server in the office and is not accessible through the firewall. An example of required local software is a custom connector for Power BI that Microsoft does not offer on its services as a standard. In short, this makes the Power BI Gateway a so-called “reverse proxy” that allows access from outside to local systems right through the firewall and independent of IP address.

OData connector

By default Invantive Cloud provides the OData protocol (version 4) to query data from Power BI Desktop and the PowerBI.com Service. The OData protocol is an important protocol for Microsoft and is included by default by Microsoft with, among others, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Power Query, Microsoft Integration Services and Azure Data Factory.

Because Invantive Cloud provides the data sets for all supported 75+ platforms via the OData protocol as supported by Microsoft, it is possible to work with the Power BI products without installing additional software locally. The use of a Power BI gateway is therefore unnecessary.
